Dutch artist Joris Hoefnagel was famous for his drawings and engravings of plants and animals. While a court artist for Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II at the end of the 16th century, Hoefnagel illustrated a book of calligraphy that had been painstakingly created years earlier by preeminent calligraphist Georg Bocskay.
